VAN-TASTIC!!
In March 2007, the animals in the
care of P.L.U.T.O. Rescue of Richmond County needed two things....a
forever home and a new van. P.L.U.T.O needed to raise $30,000 for a new
van to transport the animals from their lodging at the Staten Island
Veterinary Group on Victory Boulevard to PetSmart on Forest Avenue which
at that time was where they had held Adoption Days. "It is very important.
If I don't have transport for the animals, I'm limited as to what I can
do." said Lisa Rooney, founder of P.L.U.T.O. Rescue to Staten Island
Advance reporter Andrea Boyarsky. Lisa continued, "Right now, I have an
old van. We can only transport four dogs at a time; a lot of
times, we have a lot more than that." Ms. Rooney added that her van had
more than 150,000 miles on it and she was afraid it would break down. Her
goal for 2007 was to get a van that came specially equipped with cages
for the animals. Without the new van, volunteers who helped out at the
Adoption Days worried that the animals would not be able to get there
to meet their perfect match. "It is a vital part of the orginazation."
added volunteer Laura Piro of Dongan Hills. "It's necessary, it's not
something we can live without. The one we have now is pretty beat up; it's
on its last legs." At that time P.L.U.T.O. Rescue had raised $6,000 and
was preparing to host its anniversary fund raising dinner at Barnard Hall
in Totteville, Staten Island to help with the cost of the new
van. Well as you can see from the photos below, Lisa Rooney and
the P.LU.T.O Rescue volunteers saw their wish come
true!! The animals now have first class transportation in a state of
the art van so they can travel from their lodgings at the Staten
Island Veterinary Group and Merry Mutts Play & Stay to the
Adoption Days at PETCO, located at 2752 Veterans Road
West (In the Target Shopping Center next to Home Depot). Come by
PETCO every Saturday from 11:30am - 3:00pm and you will see the
P.L.U.T.O van parked out
